In 2004 the Daniel McLellan Memorial Fund was formed and became a registered charity. The primary goal of our charity is to assist children with leukemia in Atlantic Canada. To accomplish this we provide financial assistance, if required, to the families of children with the disease both during treatment and recovery periods.


Leukemia is typically treated with multiple courses of chemotherapy spanning many months and even years. This treatment is available at both the IWK Health Centre (NS) and the Janeway Children’s Hospital (NL). Bone marrow transplant is another form of treatment, which is unavailable in Atlantic Canada to children under 18 years of age and requires travel to another province. Only the direct cost of the child’s treatment, whether chemotherapy or transplant, is covered by the health care system.


Other associated costs include travel, accommodations, meals and
miscellaneous expenses are carried solely by the family. Such
costs can total $5000.00 or greater if travel outside the province
is required. In addition, one or both parents may be away from
their community and workplace for an extended time during their
child’s hospital stay hence reducing the family income significantly.

Our charity helps to offset some of the financial strain of these families; ultimately enabling the family to stay together during this difficult period and to stay focused on the most important issue – THEIR CHILD’S RECOVERY.
